One Sunday night, I was hanging out at a bar in Barcelona that airs NFL American football games. I tend to run into other people from the United States at these bars (big surprise there). On this particular Sunday night, I was chatting with a girl from Carlsbad, California, which is a beach town about 30 minutes south of where I used to live. Small world. Like me, she is in her early 30s, born and raised in California, and just recently decided to make the move to Barcelona. She told me she didn’t know what she wanted to do at this point in her life, wasn’t ready to settle down just yet, and needed a change. Therefore, she made the decision to quit her job and move abroad.

When I responded with 100% validation, understanding, and relatability, she said something that has stuck with me for months: “Barcelona is where all the black sheep flock to.” And it’s so true.

The Meaning of “Black Sheep”

A “black sheep” is a member of a family or group who does not fit in with the rest. Just like a black sheep stands out in a flock of white sheep, this person stands out because of their individuality, non-conformity, or unconventional beliefs.

Historically, a black sheep’s wool was less valuable and therefore viewed as inferior. Because of this, a negative connotation is commonly tied to the term black sheep. It can refer to a person who has brought disgrace or embarrassment to his or her family or group. The person may be used as the scapegoat (or scapesheep?) for family or group disfunction. It is a term commonly given to the weirdo, rebel, or outcast.

But being a black sheep isn’t all bad. In fact, I see it completely differently. The black sheep actually brings value to the group. Instead of blindly following societal norms and family traditions, this person challenges those norms and embraces individuality. The person isn’t going to do something just because society tells them to do so. Dr. Ethan L Rowan explains, “This unique position offers a powerful opportunity for self-expression and personal evolution. The black sheep serves as a catalyst for transformation, both within themselves and within their familial dynamics.”

His explanation is spot on, so instead of trying to rewrite it, I will continue to quote his words: “One of the most significant teachings that the black sheep brings forth is the importance of embracing authenticity and self-expression. By not conforming to societal expectations or family traditions, the black sheep charts their own path and discovers their truest self. This journey towards self-discovery often requires courage, resilience, and a willingness to face adversity. It is through this process that the black sheep learns to shine their unique light and inspire others to embrace their own individuality.”

Why Barcelona is the “Black Sheep Oasis”

The city of Barcelona is a haven for black sheep. People from all over the world flock to Barcelona due to its iconic architecture, beautiful beaches, and inclusive culture (read more about my thoughts on Barcelona here). It is super popular with expats living abroad, while VisaGuide ranks Spain as the number one country for digital nomads. There is a solid balance of internationals and locals, so you get a local vibe without feeling overwhelmed as an outsider. Spain boasts one of the highest life expectancy rates (>80) probably due to its emphasis on quality of life, as well as one of the highest rates of single people.

For a black sheep, it is a great place to meet like-minded people from all over the world, learn about new cultures, and experience new things. It is a city where judgement carries little power and individuality is celebrated. Doubts can be tested, questions can be answered, and perspective can be gained. Whether temporary or long-term, Barcelona is a great place to live while you “figure it out”.

Furthermore, Barcelona is actually home to the iconic sister bars known as “La Oveja Negra”, which is Catalan for “the black sheep”. These two rustic watering holes located in the Gothic Quarter and Poblenou are popular with internationals and locals alike. They are known for cheap beer jugs and airing large sporting events.

Black Sheep Identification Disclosure

Do I consider myself a black sheep? For sure. I may not fit the extremist stereotype (I haven’t been to jail, started an onlyfans, or joined a cult…yet), but I am definitely “that” uncle. My entire family lives in Northern California, the majority of them on the same street in fact. I live halfway across the globe. Both of my siblings have bought houses, gotten married, and started having kids. I’ve yet to own a pet.

Black sheep or not, I think I flocked to the right place!
