Remote working has exploded in the last few years thanks to new technologies and evolutionary work policies. The Covid-19 shutdown proved to many companies that teleworking is a viable option for many positions out there. Many people are adopting the digital nomad lifestyle, which allows them to travel the world while working at the same time.

The perks are great, but being a digital nomad is no walk in the park! Being a successful digital nomad requires discipline, sacrifice, and the right tools. It’s easy to get distracted by the travel perks and nomadic lifestyle! Therefore, here is a list of the 12 awesome tools for digital nomads and remote workers to help kick ass at work:

1. Laptop (the obvious one)

I almost didn’t even put this one on the list because it is irritatingly obvious. But, I do want to emphasize one major mistake I made: size and weight are SUPER important! Unless your laptop will sit on your desk at home 95% of the time, buy a laptop that is compact and lightweight. Digital nomads tend to wander from café to library to bar, all while carrying around a laptop. Therefore, keep it compact and lightweight. Your back and neck will thank you!

If you can swing it, go for the top dawg: The MacBook Air.

If you’re nomadding on a budget, there are plenty of other compact and lightweight options out there.

2. Ergonomic Laptop Stand

This is number two on the list of awesome tools for digital nomads because I get SO many compliments about mine. Seriously, it’s almost like walking down the street with a golden retriever puppy…everyone comes up to me to ask about it!

Being a digital nomad can mean hours spent hovering over a laptop. This can kill your back, neck, and body. I suffer from chronic back pain, so an ergonomic laptop stand is a necessity!

I use the Nulaxy Laptop Stand which is one of the tallest and sturdiest stands out there. Not only can you use it sitting down, but it is also the best standing laptop stand out there. I even set it up on my bed or dresser to watch tv/movies at eye level. It’s a bit heavy, but I don’t have to worry about my laptop tipping over!

If you want something smaller or lighter, there are tons out there in all shapes and sizes

3. Wireless Keyboard & Mouse

Whether you get the laptop stand or not, it is still worth investing in a wireless keyboard and mouse. If you buy both as a pack, then you’ll only have one USB dongle instead of two (yes…dongle is a real word!). I use a Compact Wireless Keyboard & Mouse and it works perfectly.

4. VPN (Virtual Private Network)

Because digital nomads are frequently connecting to different WIFI networks, it is highly recommended to get a VPN. A VPN (virtual private network) connects you to a secure server so that your information remains private and protected. When traveling abroad, certain websites may be restricted in certain countries. A private VPN allows you to regain access to these websites (and yes, it’s totally legal).

I use ExpressVPN which costs me around $10/month. It works great!

5. Portable Power Bank

When traveling a lot, a portable power bank is a huge saver. If you want Mr. Reliability, go with the Anker Power Bank.

Or, if you just want something on hand for the occasional charge, you can get something like the OHOVIV Portable Charger for significantly less.

6. Personal Global Wifi Hotspot

Relying on public WIFI while traveling is a dangerous game. If you need to attend an important video meeting or hit a last-minute deadline, it’s better not to leave it up to chance.

I recommend the RoamWiFi 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot Router. It works in 160+ countries, has flexible rates, and doesn’t require a SIM card (like many of them do).

7. Headsets & Earbuds

When working remotely, it is ideal to own both a headset and earbuds. Headsets work much better for conference calls. Many of them are noise-cancelling and have a reliable microphone. On the other hand, earbuds are much easier to carry with you, and they are generally preferred for day-to-day use. Therefore, buy both if you can.

  • If you want to be a complete baller, buy the Sony WH-1000XM5, which are probably the best wireless noise cancelling headphones on the market (hence the hefty price tag).
  • If you just want something reliable and affordable for a PC, go with something like the USB Headset with Microphone.
  • If you’re an Apple product fan, then of course you will want to go with the Apple Airpods Pro (2nd Gen) Wireless Earbuds.
  • A less expensive alternative would be the SoundPEATS Capsule3 Pro. Anything cheaper may provide ample sound quality, but the microphone is generally unreliable.

8. International Money Account

Making payments and exchanging currency can be a nightmare. Wise is an international money transfer platform that connects to your bank account and converts the currency for you. Conversion rates are low, and the process is quick. It works with 160 countries and 40 currencies, plus they have a great team to help you out! This is one of my favorite tools for digital nomads and freelancers.

9. International eSIM

An eSIM is an industry-standard digital SIM that allows you to activate a cellular plan from your carrier without having to use a physical SIM (more about eSIMs here).

I purchase eSIMs through Nomad, which provide competitive rates in 165+ countries. They make the process super easy and provide step by step directions for use.

10. Electronics Cable Organizer

This is a great addition to the toolkit! How many times have I misplaced my charger? Not even going to answer that. If you’re like me, keep everything organized with a electronics cable organizer.

11. Travel Power Adapter

Traveling to different countries can mean different power adapters. Instead of buying multiple adapters, consider a Universal Travel Power Adapter.

12. Airplane Phone Mount

Similar to the ever-popular car mount, an airplane phone mount is a game changer! If you are tall(ish) like me, then setting your phone on the tray table is a recipe for major neck problems. Since airplane seats come in different shapes and sizes, it is recommended to buy one with multiple mounting options.

One cool option out there is the LISEN for Magsafe Airplane Phone Holder. It comes with a magnetic mount and can be used for more than just airplanes.
